Marco Verratti on Isco display: ‘Not even Messi has come close to that’

Isco’s performance for Spain against Italy on Saturday was one that even Lionel Messi would struggle to match, according to Marco Verratti.

Isco inspired Spain to a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Italy, scoring two goals, to send them three points clear at the top of Group G.

Verratti was on the losing side at the Santiago Bernabeu, even getting nutmegged by Isco, and he says the Real Madrid midfielder was a class apart to everyone else on the pitch.

“I suffered a lot against Isco,” Verratti said in the mixed zone.

“I was taken aback by his performance. Not even Messi has come close to that level.

“When I saw his nutmeg, I felt like standing up and applauding too.”

Spain will hope to consolidate their place at the top of Group G when they take on Liechtenstein on Tuesday, while second-placed Italy come up against Israel.
